How To: The Donut Bun

The ‘it’ hair look for the spring/summer is the bun. High, low, to the side, messy, or clean and tight – it is everywhere. As a former dancer, where I lived in a bun, I thought to myself – piece of cake. What I have not thought about was how you all may not think – piece of cake. So, although I am no hair expert, I can definitely tell you folks how to create a “donut bun.”

The typical dance-performance-do is this look (above) my style icon is rocking, but normally at the nape of the neck, but to avoid looking like you just stepped out of Juilliard, stick with what SJP has going on. Although this may look near impossible, it is quite simple, and soon you will be able to do it in your sleep – which I am pretty sure I literally did after my 6am dance practices 6 days a week (don’t miss that part of dance).

So lets get started. The first thing you are going to do is grab a hair tie, scissors, and a sock as close to the color of your hair as possible. WHAT?! Yes… I said a sock.

Now that you have shaken off the fact that you have now realized you will be walking around with a sock on your head, clip off the toe of your sock and roll it out into a donut shape. If your hair is shorter, or in that awkward growing length like mine, cut off a little more then just the toe. This will make the donut thinner.

Next, slick back your hair and put it into a high ponytail – this will serve as the center of your donut – keep this in mind so you don’t end up with a donut on the top of your head.

After this grab all of that ponytail and slip your donut around the hair and pull it towards your head. This will now look like a high ponytail with a big sock circle around it. Make sure you have all of your hair coming out of the center of your donut sock. Spread your hair over the sock donut  – completely covering the sock (I like to do this loosely to get the Carrie/Lauren Conrad “I’m-not-really-trying-but-look-fabulous-anyway look”). Then grab another hair tie and wrap it around the base of the donut. Take the remaining hair sticking out and wrap it around the base of your, now, hair donut and use hair pins to secure them. BAM! You are done!

Again, to avoid looking like you just walked out of dance practice in your black leotard and pink tights, pull some hairs out (perhaps pull some strays out by your ears) and tug on the hair around the sock a bit to get a more bead-head look (I normally use the opposite end of my comb for this). Note – Imperfections are what makes this hair style fresh and up to date.

This look is perfect for any occasion, from the office to weekend errands to a cocktail party.

  1. I’ve been wanting to try the SJP look and had no clue it required a sock! Thanks for demystifying the messy bun with this great post :)
